As AMP 8 kicks off next week, the water industry braces for transformative change - will you be ready?

Companies & stakeholders within the England and Wales water industry are preparing to navigate new challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of water resource management, environmental sustainability, and customer service delivery in the years ahead.

An AMP, or Asset Management Period, is a five-year cycle set by Ofwat (the governing body for the water industry), and is due to span from the 1st April 2025 to 2030. Did you know that the concept of an Asset Management Period was introduced in 1990? This marked the beginning of a more structured approach to improve the water industry’s management and investments.

Objectives from AMP 7 included:

  • Reducing pollution incidents by 30%

  • Reducing leakage by 16%

  • Reducing internal sewer flooding incidents by 41%

Water companies have worked on major infrastructure project upgrades over the 2020-2025 period, however the results of this AMP are yet to be finalised as the period comes to a close.

The AMP 8 Framework provides opportunities for the Water industry secure funding for three main priorities. According to Sensat, these priorities include:

  • Digitalisation: Embrace complete digitalisation and data-driven operations.

  • CSOs: Transition from reactive responses to CSO spills to proactive prevention.

  • Nature-based solutions: Integrate Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) into routine operations.

Water companies are to place an emphasis on environmental sustainability within AMP 8, and are being expected to implement practices that will reduce environmental impact and carbon footprint. The industry is bracing for innovative solutions, regulatory shifts, and collaborative efforts to achieve ambitious goals.
