Environment Agency’s £200m Flood and Coastal scheme; how is it going?

coastal

In 2020, the UK government announced a £200 million Flood and Coastal innovation fund, to be led by Environment Agency from 2021 – 2027, and carry out three main programmes:

  • Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme: Testing and applying new methods to boost resilience against flooding and coastal erosion.

  • Coastal Transition Accelerator Programme: Helping at-risk communities and businesses adapt to changing coastlines.

  • Adaptation Pathways Programme: Creating plans for areas of national importance to better prepare for future flooding and coastal changes.

Now, Gov.uk have published Environment Agency’s mid programme report on the scheme. This report provides an update on the programmes, highlighting both the achievements and challenges of the Flood and Coastal resilience programme. So far, this scheme has delivered:

  • 97 natural flood management interventions, delivered to slow and store floodwaters

  • 572 river flow, rainfall and surface monitoring sensors installed to measure and monitor flood risk in real-time.

  • 211 sustainable drainage systems delivered to help control surface water runoff in urban areas

  • £21 million of partner funding contributions secured to tackle wider societal issues and improve public amenities.

The Environment Agency continues to work on improvements within the scheme, collaborating with local authorities and businesses to raise awareness & deliver solutions for the environment which helps to tackle Flood and Coastal issues.
